RECOGNIZED IN OCTOBER
“Breast cancer awareness month is recognized worldwide during the month of October,” stated Ocean County Freeholder Director Gerry P. Little, Liaison to the Ocean County Board of Health. “Early detection of breast cancer often results in a cure following treatment and that is why it is so important to bring awareness to this disease which affects many in Ocean County and throughout the world,” stated Freeholder Director Little
Ocean County Health Department Public Health Coordinator Daniel E. Regenye remarks that 1.38 million new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year and breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide. “As there is insufficient knowledge on the causes of breast cancer, early detection remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control”, Regenye added. “Awareness of early signs and symptoms and publication of available resources for medical screening and mammograms are crucial to aid in the prevention and prompt treatment of breast cancer,” concluded Regenye.
“Awareness, early detection and treatment can save lives and all residents are encouraged to help with the recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month here in Ocean County,” summarized Freeholder Director Little. “As our greatest minds continue to strive towards a cure, let us all do our part to shed light on this disease to insure timely diagnosis and treatment,” concluded Freeholder Director Little.
The Ocean County Health Department (OCHD) provides important breast cancer screening services and education for uninsured and underinsured residents. In partnership with the New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection (CEED) Program, the OCHD provides no cost physical breast and cervical exams, Pap smears, and colorectal cancer screening kits to ensure that at-risk residents do not face obstacles in receiving the preventive screening services they need. If screening results indicate additional testing or evaluation may be needed, a CEED case manager works directly with the client to receive additional tests and mammographies as indicated. To assess your eligibility or schedule an appointment with our CEED Clinic, contact OCHD’s Clinic Services at 732-341-9700, ext. 7604.
