OCHD’S RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PROSPECTIVE PET OWNERS

OCHD ENCOURAGES RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP BEFORE
ADOPTING FROM A SHELTER

Adopting a pet from a shelter is an incredibly rewarding experience, but it also comes with several responsibilities that potential pet owners must carefully consider. The Ocean County Health Department (OCHD), which oversees the animal facilities in Jackson and Manahawkin, urges residents to approach pet adoption thoughtfully this time of year and to ensure they are prepared for the lifelong commitment of caring for a cat or dog.
“The only time we encourage a pet adoption around the holidays – or any time of year – is if you’ve done your homework and you are 100 percent committed to caring for the cat or dog,” advised Daniel Regenye, Ocean County Health Department (OCHD) Public Health Coordinator. “By adopting responsibly, and not spontaneously, you ensure that you and your new pet will thrive together in a loving, stable environment.”
Things to consider before adopting a pet
1. Pets Are Not Gifts
Pets should never be given as surprises or gifts without careful consideration of the recipient’s ability and willingness to care for them. A pet is a personal responsibility, not a fleeting present. Returning a shelter pet may only cause more anxiety or stress for the dog or cat.
2. Commitment and Investment
Adopting a pet means making a long-term commitment to their well-being. Pets require daily care, regular veterinary visits, and plenty of love and attention. Pet ownership also involves financial costs for food, grooming, vaccinations, and unexpected medical expenses.
3. Prepare Your Living Situation
Ensure your home and yard are safe and pet-friendly. Fences should be secure, and hazardous materials or plants should be removed. Renters should confirm that their living arrangements allow pets.
4. Evaluate Your Family Lifestyle
Consider whether your daily routine, activity level, and family dynamics are compatible with the needs of the pet you’re adopting. Some breeds or temperaments may require more time, space, or energy than others.
5. Allow Pets Time to Adjust
A new pet may take days or weeks to acclimate to its new home, especially if you have other pets. Be patient and use gradual introductions to reduce stress and foster positive relationships.
6. Limit
Don’t contribute to our nation’s pet overpopulation problem: limit your pet’s reproduction through spay/neuter containment or managed breeding.
7. Understand Local Laws and Etiquette
Pet owners must abide by local ordinances, including licensing, leashing, and cleaning up after their pets. Maintaining a safe and clean environment is essential for the health of your pet, your neighbors, and the community.
8. Prepare for Emergencies
Create a plan for your pet’s care in case of emergencies, such as natural disasters, personal health issues, or unexpected life changes. This includes having a trusted friend, family member, or professional pet care service to step in when needed.
Benefits of Adopting a Shelter Pet
“Adopting a shelter pet not only saves a life but also offers adopters the chance to form a deep, fulfilling bond with an animal in need,” said Jackie Strawder, Manager, Ocean County Animal Facilities. “Our shelter pets may already be house-trained, are always spayed or neutered, and vaccinated, reducing much of the initial workload for new owners. Moreover, adopting from a shelter supports the ongoing efforts to reduce pet overpopulation and gives animals a second chance at a happy life.”
Strawder encourages potential adopters to visit the shelter, ask questions, and take the time to find the right match for their home and lifestyle. With careful preparation, you can make a positive difference for a shelter pet and enrich your own life in the process.
